Our Speakers

As co-founders of the Institute of Child Psychology, Tammy and Tania aim to be at the forefront of research and education while continually breaking down the barriers between science, practice and public awareness. They are passionate about sharing the latest evidence-based practices that empower parents, teachers and mental health professionals to nurture psychological well-being in children.

Tammy and Tania are registered psychologists with years of experience working with children. They are widely regarded as leading experts in their field. Our co-founders are regularly contracted as keynote speakers to kick off events and conferences. They are seasoned speakers on a mission to disseminate complex knowledge and volumes of information into accessible strategies for families and professionals seeking help. Their vision emphatically resides on the principle that a vibrant and healthy community is possible when evidence-based complex knowledge, relevant information and neurobiologically informed practices are accessible to everyone. Our co-founders’ are passionate about promoting community inclusion and whole-person wellness through comprehensive and quality integrated research and tools.

About Our Co-Founders

Tania Johnson, M.C

Co-Founder, Psychologist, Instructor, and Consultant

Tania is a Registered Psychologist and a Registered Play Therapist. She completed her undergraduate studies in South Africa before engaging in a one-year, full-time internship in Chicago at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Tania received her Master of Counselling from the City University of Seattle in 2012. During this period, she worked on the front lines and as a counsellor with foster and adoptive families facing various emotional, behavioural and cognitive challenges.

Since completing her degree, she has worked in a private practice setting with children, teens, adults and families. Tania works primarily from an attachment-based perspective. Meaning she works with clients to explore how early relationships affect how we come to understand ourselves, other people and the world.

Tammy Schamuhn, M.Sc

Co-Founder, Psychologist, Instructor, and Consultant

Tammy is a registered psychologist and registered play therapist. She earned her Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and practiced as an elementary teacher in Edmonton before doing her Master’s degree in Psychology. Tammy is also the founder and Executive Director of Family Counselling Centres. She has worked in private practice for the past seven years in Alberta.

Primarily with children and their families, offering clinical supervision to masters-level counselling students and provisional psychologists. Her therapy includes animals, and she has developed canine-assisted and equine-assisted therapy programs. Tammy is known for her work that is based on the neurology of the brain and how attachment is integral to the adaptive functioning of children and adults.

Their knowledge and expertise enable them to not only formulate programs for children aligned with the latest research, tools, and practices but also to robustly disseminate complex information that can be used by parents and practitioners alike.
